Starting a STEM degree at Imperial can feel like a big step up. Understanding complex ideas is only part of the challenge; you also need to communicate what you know clearly and confidently.
These practical Primers will help you tackle communication challenges you will meet from the start of your degree. You will practise turning complex ideas into clear explanations, building paragraphs that guide your reader, and finding ways to make a useful contribution when working with others. You will explore how to go beyond simply presenting data to explain what your results actually mean, and how to adapt your message depending on who you are communicating with. You will also consider where AI can genuinely help you develop your work while ensuring that the thinking remains yours.
Each session is hands-on and interactive, with practical strategies you can apply immediately. Together, the Primers will help you communicate with greater clarity, confidence and precision, setting you up for success at Imperial and beyond.

When and where do the Primers take place?
The Primer sessions run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 12.00 and at 17.00 in weeks 1 to 3.
The on-campus Primers will be delivered in the Centre for Academic English (CfAE). This is accessed through Sherfield level 3: from the main entrance or from the walkway take the lift or stairs to level 3 and then follow the signs.
The online Primers will be delivered through a Teams meeting (see the links in the tables below). These are interactive sessions, so please find a quiet, private space where you turn on your microphone and camera.
