How do we understand our emotions, and what role should they play in a well-lived life? This course offers a lively and accessible introduction to Emotional Intelligence through the lens of philosophy, drawing on ideas that have shaped human thinking for over two thousand years.

Join Cristina Paterno on a journey that begins with the ancient world, exploring Aristotle’s view of emotional balance and virtue, alongside Stoic thinkers such as Epictetus and Seneca, who saw emotional self-mastery as central to resilience and inner freedom. Rather than presenting Emotional Intelligence as a purely modern idea, the course reveals its deep philosophical roots and enduring relevance.

Moving into the modern period, we will consider how existentialist philosophers, including Jean-Paul Sartre and Martin Heidegger, understood emotions in relation to freedom, responsibility, and what it means to live authentically. The course concludes by examining the influential work of Daniel Goleman, whose writing brought Emotional Intelligence into contemporary public and professional life.

Throughout the course there will be plenty of opportunity for discussion, reflection, and shared exploration. Combining big ideas with practical insight, this course is designed to be both intellectually stimulating and personally rewarding, offering new ways to think about emotions in everyday life.
