Deaf Awareness

Who is this course for

Would you like to communicate more confidently and inclusively with Deaf people? This five-session course offers an engaging introduction to Deaf culture, identity, language and lived experience.

Placing Deaf perspectives at its centre, the course looks beyond a purely medical understanding of deafness and recognises Deaf people as part of a rich linguistic and cultural community. It is ideal for anyone who wants to develop a deeper understanding of Deaf experiences, whether in everyday life, education or the workplace.

You will explore the barriers Deaf people may encounter and discover practical ways to communicate more thoughtfully, respectfully and inclusively.

Course overview

Across five sessions, you will explore Deaf identity, language, culture and the importance of belonging. You will also learn some basic British Sign Language (BSL), while developing a broader understanding of the attitudes, assumptions and communication practices that shape Deaf people’s experiences.

The course is about more than learning individual signs. Through reflection, discussion and questions, you will build awareness, empathy and practical communication skills in a supportive, Deaf-centred environment. You will be encouraged to explore your understanding openly and without fear of judgement, helping you develop the confidence to interact with Deaf people in ways that are respectful, effective and inclusive.
