Who is this course for
This course is designed to centre Deaf people, experiences and perspectives, offering a deeper understanding of accessibility and inclusion. It introduces Deaf culture, identity and communication, recognising Deaf people not simply through a medical lens, but as part of a rich linguistic and cultural community.
The course is ideal for anyone who wants to better understand the lived experiences of Deaf people and build confidence in communicating in ways that are inclusive and respectful. It supports learners in recognising and removing barriers that Deaf individuals may face in everyday, educational and professional environments.
Course overview
Across the five course sessions, you will gain insight into Deaf identity, language and the importance of belonging. While you will learn some basic British Sign Language (BSL), the primary focus is on awareness, empathy and practical communication strategies rather than language acquisition alone.
A key feature of the course is the opportunity to reflect, ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions within a supportive, Deaf-centred environment. You will be encouraged to explore your understanding without fear of judgement, helping you develop the confidence to interact thoughtfully, respectfully and effectively with Deaf people.
Term dates
• Autumn (Michaelmas) Term: week beginning 26 October 2026 until week ending 27 November 2026
