Course overview

We invite you to join Dr David McKinstry for a day exploring how classical ideas were revived, adapted, and sometimes reimagined in the nineteenth century. Beginning with an exploration of the design of the Great Gallery at Somerset House (1661–1663), we will trace its roots in the writings of Vitruvius, the architecture of Palladio, and the grand urban plans of seventeenth-century London.

From there, we will examine how echoes of this lost masterpiece continued to shape Victorian buildings—some proudly monumental, others quietly reflective—as the ideals of classicism were reinterpreted to suit a very different age. We’ll consider how memory itself can be an architectural force, shaping buildings through shared cultural inheritance rather than physical presence.

The day will include a walking tour around South Kensington, where we will encounter some of London’s most beautiful nineteenth-century classical buildings, uncovering how the past informed their design and how these elegant facades still speak the language of antiquity.

No prior knowledge is needed—just a curiosity about how history, architecture, and memory intertwine. Please note: the afternoon walk includes some outdoor walking and standing, so comfortable footwear is recommended!
