Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at non-native speakers of English who have an understanding of general English but who want to understand more the way English is used in business and commerce.
Entry requirement is B2 (Cambridge First Certificate), or IELTS 5.5-6.5, or an equivalent level of understanding of spoken English.
Course overview
This practical and engaging course is designed for non-native English speakers who wish to build confidence and fluency in business and professional contexts. Led by Professor Gary Cook, the course explores how English is used across a range of real-world business, trade and commercial scenarios.
Adopting a functional, task-based approach, each session focuses on practical communication skills linked to typical situations in the workplace. You will take part in structured activities such as meetings, negotiations, presentations, email writing, and problem-solving discussions—all designed to help you achieve your professional goals through clear and effective use of English.
The course emphasises both technical vocabulary specific to the business world and the more informal or metaphorical expressions often used by native and proficient speakers. You will also gain insights into tone, register and intercultural communication—key skills when working in international environments.
By participating actively throughout the course, you will develop your ability to express ideas clearly, respond with confidence, and engage professionally in spoken and written English across a range of business contexts.
A follow on course called Practical Business English will be available in the New Year.
