Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at non-native speakers of English who have an understanding of general English but who want to understand more the way English is used in business and commerce.
Entry requirement is B2 (Cambridge First Certificate), or IELTS 5.5-6.5, or an equivalent level of understanding of spoken English.
Course overview
Led by Professor Gary Cook, this course is designed for non-native English speakers who wish to refine and expand their professional communication skills. It can be taken as a continuation of our Business English for Non-Native Speakers course or as a stand-alone programme for learners with prior experience of using English in work or business contexts.
Taking a functional, task-based approach, each session focuses on practical language use in realistic business scenarios. Activities are built around everyday professional interactions such as negotiations, team meetings, client communications, report writing, and managing workplace conflict. You will be encouraged to participate actively through role-play, group work and simulated tasks that reflect real-world challenges.
The course places particular emphasis on using English strategically to achieve your aims—whether that’s persuading a client, clarifying a misunderstanding, presenting an idea, or navigating cultural differences. Alongside key business terminology, you’ll explore the figurative and metaphorical language often used by native speakers to express complex ideas or subtle shifts in tone.
By the end of the course, you will have strengthened your ability to communicate clearly, persuasively and appropriately across a range of business situations. You will also have developed a deeper awareness of the nuances of professional English, helping you to respond with confidence in both formal and informal settings.
