Course overview
On this course, our tutor, Dr Matthew Rowe, will introduce us to the ideas, lives and social contexts of some of the greatest Western philosophers in human history. This will take us on a journey stretching back to the sixth century BC and coming forward to the present day.
Beginning with the idea of philosophy itself, and the changes in the definition of philosophy over the centuries, the course will focus on key historical and contemporary philosophers, examining major philosophical concepts, their societal context, and their lasting impact.
Philosophers studied include Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Nietzsche, and de Beauvoir, among others. Students will consider the relevance of philosophical ideas in relation to their own experiences and contemporary society.
Topics span ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, politics, aesthetics, philosophy of mind, religion, science, existentialism, and the future challenges posed by the Anthropocene and post-humanism.
You do not need any previous experience of philosophy to join this course. All welcome.
