Some of the most beautiful works of art to survive from the mediæval world are illuminated manuscripts—richly decorated books created in the scriptoria of monasteries and workshops across Europe. In them craftsmen and women worked patiently with precious materials such as gold leaf and pigments made from minerals like lapis lazuli, producing intricate designs that transformed books into extraordinary objects of devotion and learning. Famous examples, such as the Book of Kells, demonstrate the remarkable skill and imagination of these artists.
We invite you to join the celebrated contemporary manuscript illuminator Sarah Davis on this practical course you will discover how medieval illuminators created these remarkable images. On teh course we will learn how to produce our own illuminated miniatures—a finely detailed painting enhanced with gold leaf and colour that would once have decorated manuscripts, prayer books and documents.
Working as closely as possible to historic methods, we will explore the traditional materials and techniques used in medieval illumination. These include working on vellum, applying genuine gold leaf, and preparing pigments using methods that would have been familiar to medieval scribes—sometimes involving surprising ingredients such as garlic juice.
Each session introduces new techniques and processes, allowing you to gradually develop your skills while creating your own illuminated designs. The weekly programme will adapt to the interests and progress of the group, with structured projects designed to build confidence and encourage careful, detailed work.
By the end of the course you will have:
-
Learned the traditional techniques of mediæval manuscript illumination
-
Worked with materials such as vellum, pigments and genuine gold leaf
-
Created your own illuminated miniature inspired by medieval manuscripts
No previous experience is necessary and you do not need to consider yourself “good at art” to take part. All are welcome.
To ensure a supportive studio environment, places are limited to a maximum of 14 participants.
Special equipment needed
Some art materials will be provided, but you will need to supply some materials and equipment yourself. A list of what you will need will be sent before the first class, and is likely to cost in the region of £40 to £50.
