Course overview
Step back into the fascinating world of medieval and early modern England with expert guides, medievalist Dr Sarah James and art historian Dr Michael Paraskos. Join us on an inspiring journey through Four carefully chosen sites, each brimming with historical treasures, architectural marvels, and captivating stories.
Together we will uncover the beauty and significance of medieval architecture at each location, and bring to life compelling stories of the remarkable individuals associated with them—from kings and saints to pilgrims, craftspeople, and ordinary local residents whose lives shaped history.
-
Rochester: Explore the mighty Norman castle and cathedral, rich in royal and religious history, echoing tales of ambition and devotion.
-
Faversham: Wander through this charming medieval market town, with beautifully preserved timber-framed buildings, and hear stories of monks, merchants, and everyday life in medieval Kent.
-
Canterbury: Discover Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, whose breathtaking architecture shelters the stories of saints, pilgrims, and monarchs who transformed this city into a place of international significance.
-
London: Uncover hidden corners of medieval London, revealing quiet churches, mysterious cloisters, and tales of Londoners—from powerful bishops to humble tradespeople—who lived within its ancient streets.
Whether you are passionate about history, architecture, or simply intrigued by the lives that shaped our past, this unique series promises to illuminate, inspire, and connect you deeply with England’s medieval heritage.
