Radiation Safety

A wide range of radiation sources are used within the College to support Education and Research. In all cases, arrangements have been developed to ensure that the radiation science and technology benefits can be realised within safe working environments. Arrangements are described in Codes of Practice and guidance and support is available from qualified and experienced Faculty and Central Safety Department staff.

Ionising Radiation Safety

Ionising radiations are used extensively within research and teaching at the College. Within these pages, the safety management system is documented to allow work to be planned and completed in a manner that restricts, as far as reasonably practicable, the exposure to ionising radiation of those carrying out the work and of others who could be affected by the work.

Laser Safety

A wide range of high-power lasers are used within the College, many of which have the potential to cause injury, if misused. Arrangements for the management, training and safe use of lasers within the College are described within these pages.

Ultraviolet Radiation Safety

Ultraviolet Radiation (UVR) is produced by a range of equipment and processes within the College. As strong sources or prolonged exposure to UVR can be harmful, arrangements are defined within these pages to ensure responsible management of UVR sources within the College.

Electromagnetic Field Safety

The College makes use of equipment which may give rise to non-ionising electromagnetic radiation. Exposure to these radiations can give rise to acute health effects and exposure is subject to statutory limitation. College arrangements for the safe use of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are given in these pages.
