“ The Art Fellowship has been such a lovely opportunity to pursue art. I’ve enjoyed the whole process — from preparing for the interview, creating artworks, chatting with mentors and Mindy, to preparing for the exhibition. In the past, my artwork often followed a more fixed process, but through this opportunity I’ve learned to let the art guide me to where it wants to be.
What feels most meaningful to me is being able to share my work with others. Creating art is already something I deeply enjoy but having the opportunity to exhibit it and let people experience it too feels incredibly fulfilling. The exhibition feels like a celebration of all the time, care, and joy that went into making the work.
The mentors, who are all professional artists, gave very insightful feedback on my work and also shared their experiences of what it is like to be in the art world, which I found really valuable. I also really enjoyed the drawing classes with Marianne Walker. It was very different from the way I usually approach drawing, but it gave me the opportunity to slow down, observe details more carefully, and make more intentional strokes — something that felt very refreshing compared to my usual practice.
This programme has given me the space to explore my own style, and I hope to continue developing it even after the exhibition. I’m excited to experiment with more mediums and techniques in the future, and I would definitely recommend this opportunity to anyone who loves creating art! ”

"The Blyth Fellowship has been an incredible opportunity for me to develop my creative portfolio and skills. The mentors I was able to meet with were really insightful and helped me think about my work and its themes in a deeper, more meaningful way. Additionally, the drawing class I was able to join in Term 1 and the ability to buy myself art supplies to try out gave me a lot more confidence in my physical media skills as someone who usually makes photographic work. I even managed to visit some exhibitions at the Tate which helped give me some insight on things I was struggling with in my own work! Finally, I really enjoyed the process of curating work and putting it together in the form of an exhibition and learning about effective visual communication. Overall, I think I'm walking away from this year as a more complete, confident artist, and I've been grateful for that development opportunity."

"This past academic year with the Blyth Art Fellowship has been the year with by far the most creative activities in my adulthood. I especially enjoyed tutorials with a professional photographer and an art historian whom I would not have had a chance to meet otherwise. These tutorials have helped me think about my project from various aspects while adding an important coherence to my practice. This fellowship also gave me a wonderful opportunity to showcase a great number of my works, which has been one of my artistic goals since I came to London. The fellowship might be over now, but the lessons I learned and bonds I made through this scheme will stay with me for life."

"I found the Fellowship to be a great opportunity for anyone who wants to develop their artistic side along their studies. The fellowship provided me guidance from remarkable artists, and I was able to learn from their perspectives during the one-on-one tailored tutorials. Not to mention the art supplies I bought with my voucher, I could just freely try out whatever medium I have in mind. The exhibition was the most exciting part in my opinion, as I got to be in charge, and present anything I wanted. It also serves a role in letting Imperial people see that a work-art balance is definitively achievable, and that art is just as important for developing as whatever subject people study. "

"The Fellowship has been incredible in helping to develop my practice. Looking back over the past year, I can’t believe how much my work has changed. It’s really the confidence that I’ve gained through critically discussing my work during my time on this Fellowship that have nurtured my practice and allowed me to have expressed myself with the honesty and vulnerability that I never felt capable of before."

"The Blyth Art Fellowship has allowed me to develop my fine art ideation process and explore mediums and larger scales in the Blyth Art Studio space, which would have been more difficult to try otherwise. The guidance from professional artists gave many insights into the different techniques I can use to complement my current style of working. It is enjoyable to have time carved out for making and discussing art, which provides an opportunity for diffuse learning of my course content, reinforcing more intensive periods of study. For these reasons, I would recommend applying to anyone who values both artistic and STEM disciplines. "

“The Blyth Art Fellowship has been an excellent opportunity to continue developing my artistic endeavours in a structured and well-supported environment alongside my STEM degree. With a generous bursary, art gallery membership, and professional artist tutorials and guidance, it has allowed me to flourish in my art practice, as well as be immersed in the artistic community of Imperial, London and beyond. Culminating with an exhibition of your original work at Imperial’s very own Blyth Gallery, it is a great taste of what being a professional artist entails and a fantastic springboard for any young creative at Imperial!”

"The Blyth art fellowship has been a wonderful experience allowing me to continue to engage in and develop my art practice alongside my science-based degree. It has provided me with the opportunity to present and discuss my work with both professional artists and people within the arts community and has allowed me to put aside the time in my week to be creative. Having the opportunity to share ideas and inspiration with other artists, as well as try new techniques and mediums under their guidance, has been so beneficial to the progression of my work and I would recommend anyone wishing to expand on or develop their practice to consider it. "

"The Blyth Fellowship was without a doubt a unique opportunity to enrich and expand my art. Not only was I able to present my work at an art exhibit and to professional artists, but I was also able to, through their feedback and recommendations, find new inspiration with which to keep improving my work. Studying in such a science-focused university such as Imperial should not be a barrier to developing your artistic interests and the Blythe Fellowship is a great way of achieving just that."

"The Blyth Art Fellowship has definitely been a highlight of my final year at Imperial. It offered me the freedom to explore different art materials and the opportunity to talk with established artists which helped me build my own artistic mindset. I strongly recommend this fellowship to anyone who's passionate about art."

"I have really enjoyed my experience with the Blyth Fellowship and would encourage others to apply. It has helped me be a lot produce work with a more intent and direction and allowed me to focus more on the expression and meaning behind the image rather than the purely technical aspects. There are a lot of other benefits, such as funding, tutorials, Tate memberships and mentoring sessions with practising artists. These artists are matched with you according to your art practice and I have found the sessions quite inspirational and a good catalyst for creativity."
