Applied mathematical modelling, more specifically, amalgamation of clinical imaging modalities such as CT and MRI with computational cardiovascular haemodynamics. The main objective of my research is to elucidate the role of blood flow in cardiovascular disease progression such as atherosclerosis and AAA; along with designing novel biomedical devices to treat these diseases. Current approaches include computational fluid and solid mechanics along with fluid-structure interaction.
Computational Analysis of Stent-Graft Designs for Endovascular Repair of Complex Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms.
Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is a minimally invasive treatment procedure for AAA; however until recently some patients were unsuitable for EVAR due to adverse aortic neck morphology. Fenestrated- and branched-EVAR is an evolution of EVAR where AAA is treated using fenestrated stent-grafts (FSG) and branched stent-grafts (BSG), respectively. FSG shows promising short to mid-term results but the question of long term durability remains unanswered. Part of this PhD project is to answer the question of durability of FSG by simulating perioperative changes in blood flow in AAA as well as renal and iliac arteries. BSG are novel stent-grafts which are still in the design phase, therefore the second objective of this PhD project is to assess the functionality of BSG and to quantify their performance against FSG. Answering these aforementioned questions will enable to broaden the scope of endovascular surgery for AAA patients.
