Students working next to a fume hood

Innovating lab learning for the next generation of experimental and computational chemists.

Our laboratory and practical chemistry teaching is evolving to meet the needs of modern learners and future researchers. We are highlighting the lab as a dynamic space for experimentation, collaboration, and skill development, where students develop not only as chemists but as critical thinkers and responsible scientists.

We explore innovative approaches to practical chemistry education, in our students’ wet-lab work and computational modelling, to create an engaging laboratory curriculum which provides a thorough grounding in classical practice and introduces emerging technologies. Applying principles of inclusive design, and embedding aspects of sustainability, we create accessible learning experiences which prepare students to tackle contemporary global challenges.

Our labs provide a learning environment where students experience the social and collaborative nature of scientific work. Through scaffolded learning, incorporating the latest digital learning resources, we support students on a journey from foundational skills to independent research, preparing them to become the next generation of experimental scientists, in the laboratory and beyond.
