Charlie Lidbury
Hello! I’m a first year PhD in the functional programming group and I’m working on making a new programming language which combines advanced type systems with low-level high performance. I did my undergrad degree at Imperial but between my degree and my PhD I spend a bit of time in industry, working in big finance, startup finance, and the AI/agent startup circus so I have quite broad interests across industry and academia. Outside of work I love chess and cheeky after work pints, but my real passions are incredibly a non-London-compatible set of hobbies: sailing, mountain biking, and snowboarding - I love the outdoors! Aleksandra Kulbaka
I'm a third-year PhD student in the BioMedIA group, working on generative modelling for medical imaging and fairness in clinical AI. I came to ML from a software engineering background - I worked as a full-stack developer for three years and had a lot to learn when I moved into ML research, so I'm happy to chat if you're making a similar leap! Outside of the PhD, I dance salsa, do art, and try to catch as many great theatre plays as possible! I work on LLM reasoning, planning and agents. I grew up in Italy to Italian and Libyan parents before moving to the UK. I started out in the arts and humanities and studied maths and computer science before the PhD, so if you’re arriving from a less traditional background, that’s a transition I know well. Amber Gorzynski
I work on compiler testing in the Multicore Programming Group. I think compilers are programming languages are super nifty, and I love learning about them 🙂 Somewhat unusually, I do not have an extensive background in computing: my undergrad was in Econometrics, and I worked in industry for 6 years before realising that I just wanted to spend all day messing around with programming languages. It has been a bit of a lifestyle shock to return to student life. I am very happy to chat with anyone who is adjusting!

I am a final year PhD student and I work on Algorithmic Game Theory. I have a background in Economics and Computer Science. In my free time, I like to play badminton and squash, and listen to music from the late 70s to the 90s. Many of the insights you gain during your PhD are useful to know right from the start, so I’m happy to answer any questions that become more relevant as your PhD progresses!
