Who is this course for?

This course is for people who have never studied British Sign Language (BSL) before and have no prior experience in using the language.

Course overview

This ten-session introductory course in British Sign Language (BSL), taught by Antony Rabin, offers a welcoming and practical introduction to one of the UK’s official minority languages. It provides a supportive environment in which to begin developing the skills needed for everyday communication with BSL users.

During the course you will be introduced to the fundamental linguistic features of BSL, including handshapes, facial expressions, and the use of space and direction. You will learn how to greet people, introduce yourself, and use essential vocabulary related to numbers, dates, times, weather, people and everyday activities.

As your confidence grows, you will begin using BSL in a range of practical situations, such as asking for the time or date, giving directions, and taking part in short, simple conversations.

The course is ideal whether you are learning out of personal interest, seeking professional development, or wishing to communicate more effectively within your community. It also provides a helpful foundation for those who may later wish to progress to more formal or accredited BSL study.

Sessions are lively, engaging and highly practical, with plenty of opportunity for hands-on practice and interaction with fellow learners. You will also be encouraged to continue practising BSL between sessions to strengthen your developing skills.

This course does not lead to a formal qualification in British Sign Language, but is an excellent foundation for those who do want to go on to study for a formal award.
