Course Overview

On this course you will be introduced to the practice of using British Sign Language to communicate with deaf people. The course is designed for those who want to help break down possible communication barriers between different sections of society, rather than gain a formal qualification in the language.

The scenarios in the taught sessions will focus on communicating using British Sign Language in common everyday situations, and the method of tuition will centre on group work and role playing scenarios designed to be enjoyable and inclusive.

The course is aimed at hearing persons who are new to British Sign Language, and so no previous knowledge of British Sign Language or other languages is necessary. The course does not lead to a formal qualification in British Sign Language.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course you will be better prepared to:

  • identify and undertake, at a basic level, communication through BSL
  • recognise some of the key vocabulary and grammar of BSL, and the sign alphabet
  • apply BSL to communicate using simple words and phrases.

Teaching and Learning Approach

The teaching and learning approach for this course combines tutor-led instruction, group activities, and independent study supported by individual guidance from the tutor. Classes are conducted face-to-face in a classroom setting and utilise diverse teaching methods, including presentations, multimedia resources, class discussions, and interactive activities. These methods are selected to engage students, accommodate varied learning styles, and support effective understanding. The approach is also designed to recognise and be responsive to the diverse experiences, backgrounds, identities, and cultural perspectives represented within the student cohort, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.
