Who is this course for?

This course is for people who have never studied British Sign Language (BSL) before and have no prior experience in using the language.

The course does not offer a formal qualification in British Sign Language.

Course overview

This introductory course taught by Antony Rabin is designed for adults with no prior experience of British Sign Language. It offers a practical and supportive environment in which to begin learning one of the UK’s official minority languages, developing essential skills for everyday communication with BSL speakers.

Throughout the course, you will be introduced to the basic linguistic features of BSL, including handshapes, facial expressions, and the use of space and direction. You will learn how to greet others, introduce yourself, and use simple vocabulary related to numbers, dates, times, weather, people and daily activities.

As the course progresses, you will build confidence using BSL in a range of everyday situations, including giving directions, asking for the time and date, and taking part in short, simple conversations.

All sessions are taught in an enjoyable, engaging and practical way, with plenty of opportunity for hands-on practice and interaction. To support your progress, you will be encouraged to continue practising BSL outside of the taught sessions.

This course provides a friendly and accessible introduction to BSL and is ideal whether you are learning out of personal interest, for professional development, or to communicate more effectively in your community, possibly with a view to enrolling later on a more formal or even accredited BSL course.
