From smoky clubs and street parades to concert halls and global festivals, this classroom course from Imperial after:hours adult education programme explores the rich and evolving world of jazz in all its forms.
Join musician Neil Sopher for a weekly journey through the history of jazz, from its roots in blues, ragtime and early New Orleans styles to swing, bebop, cool jazz, fusion and contemporary developments. We'll examine key themes such as improvisation, innovation, cultural exchange, politics and identity, and the shifting boundaries between 'popular' and ‘serious’ music, while asking what gives jazz its enduring power and relevance?
Expect informed listening, lively discussion and fresh perspectives on one of the most influential musical traditions of the modern age.
No previous knowledge is required and the course is designed to approach jazz in an open and accessible way. All are welcome.
