Join artist Fitzroy Schofield to discover the creative possibilities of printmaking in this welcoming beginner’s course introducing the techniques of linocut and relief printing. Combining traditional craft with contemporary artistic practice, this course offers a hands-on introduction to one of the most rewarding forms of image-making.
Relief printmaking has a long and fascinating history, stretching back centuries and closely associated with the development of printing itself, from the early press of Johannes Gutenberg to the vibrant print studios of today. The introduction of lino as a carving material opened new possibilities for artists, and it remains one of the most accessible and expressive ways to create printed images.
Working in a supportive print studio environment, you will learn how to carve and print your own designs using lino blocks. Along the way you will explore key techniques including engraving, proofing, and editioning prints, gradually building confidence as you develop your own ideas and imagery.
Each session introduces a new skill or process, allowing you to experiment, refine your technique and produce a growing body of printed work. As the course progresses, you will gain insight into how printmakers think and work, developing both practical skills and a more critical understanding of the printmaking process.
Teaching combines group demonstrations, shared discussion and individual guidance, reflecting the collaborative atmosphere of a working print studio. The course encourages experimentation, creativity and the development of your own personal approach to printmaking.
By the end of the course you will have:
-
Learned the core techniques of linocut and relief printmaking
-
Produced a series of engraved blocks and printed images
-
Gained an understanding of proofing and editioning prints
-
Developed confidence in presenting and displaying your work
No previous experience is required. Whether you are completely new to printmaking or looking to explore a new creative medium, this course offers a stimulating introduction to the art of making prints.
