Course overview

This course offers an introduction to the ideas, lives, and social contexts of ten significant philosophers within the Western tradition. Spanning from ancient to modern times, each week we will join Dr Matthew Rowe to examine the central concepts each philosopher addressed, their societal influences, and their impact on subsequent thought. Participants will explore how these philosophical inquiries remain relevant today.

Each session is dedicated to a specific philosopher (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Nietzsche, and de Beauvoir, among others), providing a comprehensive overview of their contributions and the enduring questions they posed. The course encourages participants to reflect on these ideas in the context of contemporary life and thought.

You do not need any previous experience of philosophy to join this course - all welcome!
