Abstract
The defence and security sector has always been a data rich environment, resulting in many scientific advances being published in the data science literature over the last 30 years. This talk will provide an overview of data science within the defence and security sector, detailing the key statistical and computing methodologies employed, and the research challenges currently facing the industry.
Speaker Bio
Dr Mark Briers is the Strategic Programme Director at the Alan Turing Institute. He has worked in the defence and security industry for over 16 years, directing research programmes in the area of statistical data analysis. He completed his PhD in 2007 at Cambridge University where he developed Sequential Monte Carlo based techniques for state-space filtering and smoothing. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, and a member of several committees at the Royal Statistical Society. His current research interests include scalable Bayesian inference, sequential inference, and anomaly detection.
