Presentation overview

Innovation is a feature of economic and social life that creates jobs, growth and higher living standards. But innovation is beset with risk, and sometimes destroys traditional industries and disrupts social cohesion.

This discussion poses two questions. First, it asks whether economic growth can continue to be stimulated through innovation. Second, it asks what type of growth might be expected in future and what its implications are for employment.

Professor Gann will draw on examples from the Internet-of-Things, data science, data analytics, artificial intelligence and biomedical engineering, all of which are providing opportunities to fuel economic growth.

Professor Gann looks forward to exploring the implications of these issues for government policy, for companies and universities, in discussion after his opening remarks.
