Abstract
Human Factors in Transport are intrinsically and extrinsically embedded within operations, processes and culture. For example, Rail Asset Management traditionally involves re-active strategies for service provision and maintenance (e.g. on-site inspection and supervision). Often, though, asset maintenance facilitates cases for adopting new technology to support both services and personnel. There is a strong shift, nowadays, towards more ‘predict-and-prevent’ models of asset maintenance utilising ubiquitous technologies. However, there is limited understanding of how this may influence personnel’s remote and on-site decision-making. Similarly to Rail, new models of operations and processes emerge within Aviation and Airports particularly. Recently, there is a great shift towards enhancing mobile services, self-servicing and self-management in passenger trips. Passengers are anticipated to gain more control in managing their trips while airport and airline services become support agents. Understanding passenger decision-making and needs while navigating at airports is important for identifying appropriate levels for embedding new technologies within such complex socio-technical systems. In this talk, I will provide a mini portfolio of associated human factors as emerge within two different case studies: Asset Maintenance in Rail and Passenger Experiences at airports.
