Engineering creates innovations and solutions using empirical data, models, analysis, and properties of materials. Properties of solids, liquids, and gases represent a need that bridges all engineering disciplines, whether the property is the state of matter, its strength, thermal stability, conductivity, refrigerant performance, bioaccumulation, or binding strength of a drug to a cellular receptor.

Engineering ‘molecular principles’ help us to correlate measured properties with substances and, increasingly, to predict them. In this lecture Phillip R. Westmoreland, Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professor and  Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, North Carolina State University will illustrate these principles from his group’s work and from industry to show the usefulness of these theories and the tools that apply them.
