HELIX studio open days
As part of the 2015 London Design Festival, IGHI’s HELIX design team will conduct a health-design challenge in our innovative pop-up studio in the heart of a London hospital.
We invite you to contribute your thoughts & ideas to help solve a healthcare problem and play a part in the development of design solutions in real-time.
The HELIX studio open days are:
- Sunday 20th September (11am – 5pm)
- Monday 21st September (Midday – 6pm)
- Friday 25th September (Midday – 6pm)
- Saturday 26th September (11am – 5pm)

About the studio
The HELIX Studio is the heart of our operations, a purpose built innovation lab in the centre of St Mary’s hospital campus.
The studio serves as a place for HELIX to collaborate with the hospital community, as a hub for innovation events, and as a versatile workspace for the everyday activities of the design team.
Above all, having a design studio that makes such bold statement tells the hospital community that we are here to learn from each other, work together and make improvements in healthcare delivery.
The studio was designed by RCA Architecture students Ralf Alwani, Joanna Hyland and Matthew Volsen, who said, ‘Working closely with professionals from various fields has given us an invaluable insight into the practising industry. We have been thrilled to collaborate with a great team of people and have found the experience a rewarding one.’ Their design derived from the principles of the HELIX initiative. On this basis, they describe the structure as a ‘bookcase’ and the workspace as a table, all carefully crafted with a simple selection of materials.
The HELIX studio won the Helen Hamlyn Award for creativity in the Helen Hamlyn Design Awards 2015 and has been shortlisted for The Wood Awards 2015.
