Meet our new professors
Leroy Gardner, Professor of Structural Engineering at Imperial College London
The research of Professor Leroy Gardner and his group concerns the behaviour and design of steel structures, with a particular emphasis on high performance steels. The primary constituent element of steel is iron, with the selective addition of alloying elements bringing enhanced mechanical properties and durability to suit a range of engineering applications.
The focus of this inaugural lecture is on the testing, simulation and design of stainless steel structures. The underpinning research that has enabled the development of novel design methods that recognise and capture the particular material characteristics of stainless steel is explained. The impact of the research throughout the structural engineering community, as well as the global reach of the findings, are also highlighted.
About the speaker
Leroy Gardner is Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. He is engaged in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, specialist advisory work and leading an active research group in the area of steel structures.
His principal research interests, in respect of which he has co-authored over 250 papers, as well as numerous textbooks and design guides, lie in structural testing, numerical modelling and the development of design guidance. He has contributed to the provisions of several international structural design standards and chairs the BSI mirror group responsible for UK input into the Eurocode for steel structures.
Professor Gardner is a Fellow of the Institutions of Civil (FICE) and Structural (FIStructE) Engineers, and is actively involved in both. For IStructE, he is Chair of the North Thames Regional Group and the Research Panel, and a Member of Council and a number of other panels and committees.
He is a member of the editorial board of five international structural engineering journals, as well as being Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Steel Structures and the research journal of the Institution of Structural Engineers, Structures.
Away from engineering, Professor Gardner enjoys swimming in lakes, cycling up hills, running around Hyde Park and competing in triathlons with his wife; last year they completed Ironman Switzerland.
