Schools Open Afternoon (A-level) – Friday 19th June 2015

The Department of Mathematics is holding a “Schools Open Afternoon” on Friday 19th June 2015 from 1pm to 3.45pm for A-level students about to enter their ultimate or penultimate year in secondary school. Schools are welcome to send groups of up to 15 students to this event. Teachers will also have an opportunity to meet at a “Teachers’ Forum” during the afternoon and discuss issues around University transition and admissions.

Prior registration is required.  Register for the “Schools Open Afternoon”

Schools Open Afternoon :

The event will include mathematics talks for students and an opportunity to view the department’s first year undergraduate students’ poster project presentations (along with a hands on activity for the visiting students). There will also be an opportunity for groups to have a student led tour of the College.

The talks given will be by Professor Kevin Buzzard and Dr Florencia Tettamanti.

Professor Buzzard, a Pure Mathematician at the College, specialises in Algebraic Number Theory. He has received numerous prizes and recognitions for his work; including the Whitehead Prize in 2002 for “his distinguished work in number theory”, and the Senior Berwick Prize which is given “in recognition of an outstanding piece of mathematical research” in 2008. While a student in secondary school, he earned a perfect score at the International Mathematical Olympiad. Professor Buzzard regularly teaches 2nd and 3rd year courses at the College.

Dr Florencia Tettamenti gained her PhD from Imperial College London and is currently working and teaching as a Research Associate at the College in Applied Mathematics, mainly concentrating on Fluid Dynamics. Florencia also spends time in schools as a “Mathematician in Residence” sharing the various possibilities of study and options in Mathematics.

The event is intended for strong mathematics students about to enter their final or penultimate year of secondary school and who may be considering studying mathematics at university. We welcome school groups of up to 15 people.

The event will commence at 1pm and is due to finish at 3.45pm. The event will start at 1pm in the Clore Lecture Theatre, Second Floor, Huxley Building, Department of Mathematics, Imperial College London, 180 Queen’s Gate, South Kensington, SW7 2RH.

 Teachers’ Forum:

As part of the event, teachers coming with groups (or if you are unable to bring a group and would like to attend on your own, you are welcome to do so), will be invited to a coffee and discussion – a Teachers’ Forum – with members of our academic team and our Admissions Tutor, Dr Colin Cotter.

The Teachers’ Forum will concentrate on the jump between A-level and University level mathematics and the best ways to help prepare students for the transition. We also welcome discussions on other areas of interest to you, such as the changes to A-levels or university admissions. We hope for the Forum to be an open discussion, a sharing of best practice.

For the Forum to be most effective, we welcome you to raise areas of concern or questions to us ahead of time; please note these in the Registration form.
