Tom will be sharing exciting updates on the new Chemistry Building, and filling you in on all the developments from Imperial West. The event will take place on Friday 13 March from 18.30, and will be hosted by alumnus Lucy Parakhovnik at her house in Santa Monica. Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

About Professor Tom Welton

Professor Tom Welton is an expert in sustainable or green chemistry, which aims to make the chemicals and related industries both environmentally and economically sustainable. Sustainable chemistry strives to maintain and spread the benefits of modern chemistry and chemical products to all, while consuming nature’s resources at a rate that is lower than that at which they can be naturally replenished and producing waste at a rate which is less than that at which it can be naturally remediated.

Tom is particularly interested in using solvents to improve chemical processes, and has focussed on ionic liquids throughout his research career. The central academic aim of his research is to understand how the immediate chemical environments, in which reacting species find themselves, influence the reaction process. He is also interested in the use of biomass as a source of fuels and chemicals.

About the Faculty of Natural Sciences

The Faculty of Natural Sciences’ research strategy is to harness the strengths and breadth of their research to meet the changing needs of society, industry and healthcare, and to address the global challenges of climate change, energy, global health and security. Driven by the expertise and knowledge of academic staff in our Departments, the Faculty works to respond to emerging natural science issues and deliver on the priorities of our major funders. Teaching and training the next generation of scientists is a priority.

Alumni are invited to RSVP by email for Lucy’s address.

Please note that space is limited, so places will be allocated on a first come first seved basis and guest places will depend on RSVP’s.
