Abstract

Picocon is the annual one-day Science Fiction & Fantasy convention run by the Imperial College Science Fiction and Fantasy Society, ICSF. Our theme this year is ‘Survival’. Open to the general public, the event will include Guest of Honour doing talks and panels, the Destruction of Dodgy Merchandise using liquid nitrogen and a giant hammer, a quiz, and silly games. There will also be stalls selling books, ICSF t-shirts, artwork and other items. Visit the website for more information, and to register and buy tickets.

Biography

David Southwood profileProfessor David Southwood is a British space scientist and current President of the Royal Astronomical Society. He has interests in solar–terrestrial physics and planetary science, and accomplishments include building the magnetic field instrument for the Cassini Saturn orbiter. Until 2011 he was Director of Science and Robotic Exploration at the European Space Agency, and he now holds the post of Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College London. He is also a patron of the Science Fiction Foundation.

Charles Stross profileCharles Stross is a full-time science fiction writer and resident of Edinburgh, Scotland. The author of six Hugo-nominated novels and winner of the 2005 and 2010 Hugo awards for best novella, he has won numerous other awards and been translated into at least 12 other languages. Stross writes in a variety of sub-genres and styles, including Lovecraftian horror, space opera and fantasy.

Sarah Pinborough profileSarah Pinborough is a critically acclaimed horror, thriller and YA author. In the UK she is published by both Gollancz and Jo Fletcher Books at Quercus and by Ace, Penguin and Titan in the US. Her short stories have appeared in several anthologies and she has a horror film Cracked currently in development and another original screenplay under option. She has recently branched out into television writing and has written for New Tricks on the BBC and has an original series in development with World Productions and ITV Global.

Sarah was the 2009 winner of the British Fantasy Award for Best Short Story, and has three times been short-listed for Best Novel. She has also been short-listed for a World Fantasy Award. Her novella, The Language of Dying was short-listed for the Shirley Jackson Award and won the 2010 British Fantasy Award for Best Novella.
