In this talk I will review some recent results, as well as some difficulties we have encountered while trying to understand the interaction of the quantized electromagnetic field with macroscopic objects. In particular I will show several situations where the theory gives unphysical (infinite) results, and that the introduction of non-local modifications to the theory can render these results finite.
