Paul will start with a review of the history of the UK Transmission and Distribution electrical networks. The existing electrical network was designed for large scale centralised generation plant and not for decentralised energy generation from variable output plant. What is the current status of the network and what are the future challenges of integrating emerging renewable energy sources into an existing critical electrical infrastructure?

The presentation will then cover the big challenges facing Britain: security of supply, energy mix, environmental impact and affordability of the government agenda. Cost comparisons with other EU Countries and the United States will assess the affordability of current government thinking with regard to Co2 emissions and renewable energy mix targets.

Paul will further explore how do we overcome the diverse and complex challenges of an evolving sustainable energy system with pragmatic and joined-up solutions? How do we align the various stakeholders with differing agendas?
