Abstract

Chewing Gum is found on pavements, carpets, clothes throughout the world. It is now a serious, expensive and unpleasant issue for those who have to clean it up and dispose of it. There has been little innovation in the formulation of chewing gum in the last 20 years and  we have developed a new gum ingredient that is based on comb copolymers which are schizophrenic in that they like both oil and water. In this talk the ideas and history  behind the development of a removable gum will be explored together with some demonstrations on chewed gums.

Biography

Professor Terence Cosgrove’s work focuses on the application of polymers surfactants and colloids in a wide variety of systems of practical interest.

The main techniques used to probe these systems include NMR, scattering and simulation methods to probe details on the molecular level and rheology and general surface techniques to explore bulk proprieties.
