On Monday 16th September 2013, The Photonics Group at Imperial College led an interactive workshop on optics and photonics for around 30 A Level students.

The Exploring Photonics event was organised by The Photonics Group from the Physics Department at Imperial College London and the challenging format of the event was designed to specifically benefit students who may be considering pursuing a career path in science or engineering.

The event was aimed at year 12/13 students studying A Level Physics. The event offered students an interactive programme of activities and introduced them to basic concepts of light-matter interaction, as well as being exposed to frontiers, both fundamental and applied, of current optical research. During the day the students explored topics such as: exploiting diffraction, the fundamentals of lasers, an introduction to optical imaging and a University style lecture led by Professor Martin McCall.

Following the event, one of the participants said: “I liked the fact that the learning was interactive so we could learn from a hands on approach. The workshop leaders also explained new theories and concepts very clearly and in an entertaining manor.”
