Abstract: I will give a brief introduction to some of the work we are doing in Southampton. In the first part I will discuss our study of recent spin transport experiments carried out the in the group of M. Zwierlein at MIT where two fermionic clouds of different spin polarisation collide in a harmonic trap. We are able to simulate this system using a Boltzmann equation and explain the bizarre “bouncing cloud” behaviour they observed in terms of nonlinear mode coupling. Then (depending on time constraints) I will explain an experimental proposal to bring few-body phenomena into the context of optical lattice physics and thereby extend the usual Hubbard model paradigm using mixtures of trapped and untrapped atoms.
