Course Aims

  • To motivate and elevate students’ learning towards higher levels of attainment
  • To encourage students to apply to University, to continue to study STEM subjects and support students in considering a STEM related career, and
  • To improve students’ academic and interpersonal skills, personal effectiveness and confidence in their ability.

Participants will have the opportunity to meet representatives from the BG Group and to explore STEM career paths relating to opportunities in the energy, oil and gas, and related industry.

Personal Effectiveness sessions are designed to help students with learning styles, time management, self-confidence, communication and presentation skills, interview skills, university applications, and STEM careers advice.

Application Criteria
The following considerations will be made to determine applicant eligibility, whereby a student:

  • May live within a post code area where there is a higher than average concentration of social deprivation
  • May be the first generation in their family to attend university
  • May have been entitled to receive Free School Meals during Year 11 studies
  • Will be asked to detail on application their STEM aspirations, what has motivated them to apply to the Programme, and how they believe the Programme will be beneficial to them
  • Will be required to obtain a teacher declaration confirming the student’s GCSE achievements and their enrolment to A Level mathematics and science courses, and any additional social or educational circumstances which may suggest that they would be particularly deserving of a place
  • Will have achieved at least 5 A/A*s at GCSE
  • Will be starting Year-12 in September 2013 and are taking 3 A-Levels (or equivalent) across two years of A Level studies, of which one is A-Level maths and at least one is A Level biology, chemistry or physics.

Please note:

  • We are not able to consider applications from Independent school students
  • We are less likely to consider applications from students who attend high-performing maintained schools or colleges
  • Applicants will require a teacher to support their application
  • Places will be confirmed by the October half-term

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview at Imperial College on Saturday 12th October 2013.
