On 15th April 2013, Dr Simon Foster from the Physics Department at Imperial College London, presented to students at Heartlands High School, London.
Dr Simon Foster acts as the Outreach Officer in the Physics Department at Imperial College London. He is a qualified rocket scientist and his research focuses on Solar-terrestrial Physics, specialising in solar variability and climate change.
Simon visited Heartlands High school to give a series of talks to Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils about the history of rocket science. Through his talk, Simon invested the science behind launching rockets, getting satellites into orbits, the issues surrounding manned space flight and getting a glimpse of futuristic rocket engines. Simon delivered his talks in a in a hands-on way so that the students could participate in his work.
Simon also took the opportunity to meet up with teachers from the school who took part in the recent Teachers Workshop, discussing how to teach certain aspect of physics as well as helping to develop resources and strategies for teaching GCSE Astronomy.
By the end of Simon’s talk at Heartlands High school, the audience could all call themselves rocket scientists!
