On Thursday 25th April 2013, Dr Mark Richards from the Physics Department at Imperial College London attended a Higher Education, Careers and Gap Year Fair at Berkhamsted School.

Dr Mark Richards is a senior Teaching Fellow and Director of Outreach for the Physics Department at Imperial College London. In addition to wide-ranging research and Industrial interests, Mark has worked extensively with Imperial Outreach and numerous supplementary schools throughout London over the last 10 years – developing and delivering teaching programs that aim to inspire young students into pursuing further study in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects.

The aim of theHigher Education Fair was to introduce students in years 11 and 12 to career and higher education options and opportunities. 50 Universities attended the careers fair, to speak to students about their options after A Levels.

Mark spoke to a number of students about studying Physics at University. He gave an overview of the Physics degrees available at Imperial College London, information about the careers that a Physics Degree can lead to as well as information about studying degree level Physics. Many students had questions about Imperial College and what it is like to live in London.

Following the event, Mark said “Whilst it was pleasing to know that there were many students who had heard of Imperial, I was slightly surprised by the number of students (and parents) who were not aware of the specific types of courses on offer, or the interview process. This was therefore a great occasion to make more people aware of the various opportunities to visit the college that exist such as Imperial festival and the Departmental or College Open Days”
