India’s long-term low-carbon development pathway
This workshop will explore potential emissions pathways for India that will avoid dangerous levels of climate change. An analysis of the long-term low-carbon develpopment pathways will allow particpants to explore their opportunities and challenges, highlighting key technologies and sectors that will play a role in meeting these.
Background
Nations are currently negotiating towards some form of international agreement on climate change, within the Durban Platform on Enhanced Action as set out at the 17th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties summit in 2011. Such an agreement is focusing nations’ attention on their long-term opportunities to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, within a framework which allows for continued economic growth and development. India can look forward to significant economic growth over the coming decades, which will bring with it a marked increase in demand for energy services across all major sectors of the economy. As such, there is widespread potential to deploy low-carbon energy technologies in the power, industrial, buildings and transport sectors, which would not only lower India’s future reliance on fossil fuels, but which could also engender world-leading technology expertise for India’s manufacturing industries. This workshop will provide an opportunity for research groups in the UK and India that are analysing India’s long-term energy technology options to present their findings, discuss the costs and benefits of different technologies, and identify opportunities for further research, development and international collaboration.
