Abstract:  I will discuss what happens if you mix Deligne’s conjecture on the Galois theoretic properties of L-values and the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer. The resulting statement can be sometimes used to predict both the existence of points of infinite order on elliptic curves and non-trivial elements of the Tate-Shafarevich group. Examples will be provided.

The seminar is preceded by the Study Group, which will be on Geometric Langlands in some form, and which is being organized by Alex Paulin.

Coffee/tea at 3.30pm in room S5.21.
