Abstract: I will give an introduction to Jun Li’s expanded degenerations. These are really beautiful things used to define invariants of a variety *relative* to a divisor, and used to define invariants of varieties glued from two pieces across a divisor. I’ll try to keep it simple – lots of examples, introduction to “deformation to the normal cone”, etc.
