This is a youth event for school groups and members of the public between the ages of 11 and 18 years old.
The day will consist of three 40 minute workshops:
Workshop 1: Palaces
The Science Museum is currently exhibiting Palaces, a unique art and science project created by artist Gina Czarnecki and stem-cell scientist Sara Rankin. The crystal resin ‘palace’ is encrusted with donated human milk teeth – one of many sources of ‘adult’ stem cells. Stem cells can be used to grow and repair human tissue. Teeth are natural waste – so why not recycle them?
Workshop 2: My Sister’s Keeper
An activity based workshop involving discussion and debate around the issue of consent and saviour siblings, including clips from the film My Sister’s Keeper:
Workshop 3: Stem Cell Therapy – The Future of Medicine?
This workshop will give pupils an insight into the World of Stem cells. Professor Sara Rankin, a stem cells biologist will give a presentation about stem cells, explaining what they are, where they come from and their potential for the treatment of many different diseases in the future.
