To mark the 10th anniversary of the publication of the book Open Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology, A Research Policy  special issue  will be published entitled “Open Innovation: New Insights and Evidence.” The guest editors are Henry Chesbrough, Ammon Salter, Wim Vanhaverbeke and Joel West, working in conjunction with Research Policy co-editor Ashish Arora.  

Special Issue Conference

To aid in the development of papers, this conference will discuss and develop papers being prepared for the special issue. The call for papers has now closed.

Potential research areas include, but are not limited to:

  • How does the use of open innovation impact the capabilities of the firm to engage in business venturing and strategic renewal?
  • What environmental and internal factors trigger companies to engage in open innovation?
  • What are the performance implications of open innovation? 
  • Under what conditions do the costs of open innovation exceed the benefits?
  • How have patterns of open innovation changed over time?
  • What synergies are available by combining inbound and outbound modes of innovation?
  • How should open innovation be applied in new ventures and small and medium-sized companies?
  • How does open innovation change the role of intellectual property in a firm?
  • What the conceptual and empirical limitations of prevailing models of open innovation?
  • What are the implications of an open innovation for individuals and teams?

Papers on other topics related to innovation beyond the boundaries of the firm are also welcome.

Because of the accelerated schedule, authors hoping to participate in the special issue need to meet all deadlines.

Accommodation and meals will be provided for one author per paper. Due to the size of the venue, only a limited number of additional authors or other interested participants will be allowed to attend (at their own expense) on a first-come, first-served basis.

Submitting Papers to the Conference

Conference papers should conform to the same formatting standards as a Research Policy journal article. Authors have a choice of two submission formats:

  • A complete manuscript in PDF form that conforms to Research Policy length requirements; or
  • An extended abstract of approximately 900 words.

Due to the accelerated schedule, we will be unable to provide feedback for authors prior to the conference.
