The Imperial College Union and the Royal College of Art are teaming up to bring scientists and artists together, with the aim of producing a series of collaborative artwork inspired by science and engineering.

Participants from Imperial might feel the potential of their field to inspire thought provoking art; while RCA attendees might be able to provide a new outlook on current scientific research. Wherever you stand this is a great opportunity to experiment with new concepts and move out of you comfort zone to produce something fresh and inspiring.

Background

Artifact was launched for the first time last year very successfully. There was a high turn out for this event and high quality artwork was submitted for the exhibition. The event will start with an introductory lecture at 6pm exposing last year’s work followed by an inspirational presentation by artists and scientists that have worked using the interaction between arts and science. The name of the speakers will be disclosed closer to the date. Afterwards, we will move to another room for the actual speed dating, where refreshment will be provided. The speed dating will consist of a series of three minute interviews in which Imperial and RCA students will talk about their work and their area of interest. There will a more informal networking at the end of the event.

The project’s results, fruit of the collaboration between staff and students from both institutions, will be displayed at Imperial College’s Blyth Gallery (Level 5 Sherfield Building) during September and at the RCA’s Hockney Gallery during the first week of October. There will be a private viewing during the time the exhibition is on.

We will be hosting more events during the year, including tours around each institution and a private viewing.
