High performance hard magnetic materials are of growing importance for clean energy technologies (hybrid electric vehicles, gearless wind turbines…) and have great potential for use in micro-systems. In this talk I will report on the preparation and characterisation of NdFeB thick films. On the one hand these films are used as model systems to study magnetization reversal, with the aim of guiding the development of heavy rare earth free magnets. On the other, they are being developed for integration into micro-systems. Some lab-on-chip type applications of these micro-structured films will be presented.
