Title: Multifunctional nitride materials
Abstract: Functional oxides have been the subject of substantial theoretical and practical interest in recent years, with applications ranging from high-density data storage to microwave devices to solar water splitting: other classes of materials have not yet shown such a wide range of functionality and applications. However, in this talk , I will discuss theoretical and experimental progress towards a new class of Sc-based functional nitrides, which should display semiconducting, ferroelectric and magnetic properties. These materials have the advantage of compatibility with existing III-nitride large-area epitaxial growth and processing techniques and which additionally offer the prospect of solving long-standing problems relating to III-nitride optoelectronics.
