Abstract
“At a certain stage of development, the material productive forces of society come into conflict with the existing relations of production or – this merely expresses the same thing in legal terms – with the property relations within this framework of which they have operated hitherto”.
Preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy, Karl Marx (1859)
Marx was predicting the overthrow of the bourgeois society by social revolution. With 20/20 hind sight, we know this was not the case, but the current European sovereign debt crisis and the US’s inability to make hard decisions around their deficit, not to mention the Chinese Communist political economy’s exponential growth and their unrestrained embrace of capitalism, you have to say we do indeed live in interesting times. The real question is; are our political elite up to the task of restoring financial order?
