Professor Martin Rees, Master of Trinity College, Cambridge and a visiting professor at Imperial College London, invites Imperial staff and students to his lecture: “From Here to Infinity:  Frontiers and Limits of Science”, hosted by the John Templeton Foundation. Professor Rees is the winner of the 2011 Templeton Prize and his lecture is a response to the John Templeton Foundation Big Question: “How Large is Physical Reality?”. Three Templeton Prize Laureates will be responding to the lecture. They are: Dr. Paul Davies, Arizona State University Prof. George Ellis, FRS, University of Cape Town, Dr. Charles Townes, University of Berkeley. The lecture will be followed by a gala reception honouring Martin Rees.

Biography

Martin Rees has been Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, since 2004. He holds the honorary title of Astronomer Royal and is also a visiting Professor at Imperial College London. He served as President of the Royal Society from 2005–10 and was appointed to the House of Lords in 2005.

After studying at Cambridge, Martin Rees held research positions in the UK and the USA, before returning to Cambridge as Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy and then becoming Director of the Institute of Astronomy.

Martin Rees is author or co-author of more than 500 astrophysics and cosmology research papers, as well as seven books and numerous articles on scientific and general subjects. He has lectured widely and received numerous international awards including the Balzan Prize and the Crafoord Prize. He is a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Pontifical Academy and several other international academies.
