Call for Presenters
Do you have an example of an engineering idea that has had a positive impact on healthcare in developing countries?
Do you have an engineering idea that has not made it to market or the clinic in the developing world due to technical, logistical, economic, or manpower issues?
By exploring these issues with informed, experienced, influential figures, and users, we seek to help the uptake of appropriately engineered solutions that bring healthcare benefits to developing countries. The event will have a morning of scene setting talks from the speakers listed here, and the afternoon will consists of demonstrations, posters, and talks from people like you.
If you would like to present your engineering product or idea, either by poster, demonstration, or formal presentation, then please send a one page free-form abstract to b_miah@imeche.org describing your engineering product and the mechanism of presentation that you would like.
The abstract deadline is 11 May 2011 and selected presenters will be informed by 15 June 2011.

According to WHO, up to three quarters of medical devices designed in industrialised countries fail to work in the developing world. There are some shining examples of good engineering ideas which have brought great benefits to healthcare provision in developing communities. But there are others that have failed because the provider and the users had differing expectations. Typical issues have been how the equipment can be paid for, what problems it is trying to solve, how it will be deployed and used in practice, and what the operating environment will really be like. The purpose of the event is to bring together developers and users in order to promote understanding of each other’s concerns, and hence further the spread of engineering solutions to healthcare problems in developing countries.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Professor David Balmforth, Vice president, Institution of Civil Engineers and Technical Director
- MWH Professor Chris Lavy OBE, Nuffield Dept of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Oxford
- Andrew Gammie, IET Healthcare Technologies Network and Fishtail Consulting Revd
- Dr Brendan McCarthy, National Adviser: Medical Ethics and Health and Social Care Policy, The Archbishops’ Council, The Church of England
- David Constantine MBE, Motivation UK
