The Imperial College Wellcome Centre for Clinical Tropical Medicine held its 12th Annual Scientific Meeting in the Melia Hotel, Lima, Peru on Thursday and Friday, March 1 and 2, 2007.

Over the two days there was an excellent series of talks focussing on tuberculosis presented in its many elements, ranging from transmission, clinical manifestations (especially in the context of HIV infection), diagnosis and prevention. The meeting dovetailed with The Wellcome Trust’s Latin America Network Meeting to which Fellows and collaborators of the Centre were invited and participated fully.

Our meeting was attended by close on 120 individuals from South Africa, India, Australia and the UK and a good representation from Fellows, collaborators and students in Peru. The meeting provided an opportunity for Peruvian researchers to present their work to an international gathering and was excellently received. Earlier in the week the overseas visitors, including representatives from the Wellcome Trust were treated to a tour of the Health Centre in the Pampas shanty town, Hospital de dos Mayo and Unversidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. The meeting was also coupled with a celebration of 100 years of The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine at which Drs Hugo Garcia and Emico Gonzalez spoke on the fascinating topic of cysticercosis, the commonest cause of epilepsy in the developing world. A farewell dinner for participants brought to an end a week of good clinical science, cameraderie and prospects of collaboration.
