Throughout history speech has been a major form of social influence and control, as people have rallied around those who could motivate an audience of one or many. Motivating a team of staff, players, family, colleagues is a hugely beneficial life skill to learn.

Purpose of the workshop

The purpose of this professional development workshop is to remind delegates of good public speaking but focus specifically on a speaker’s ability to motivate an audience, particularly an audience that might not be initially receptive to a message. Conducted within a supportive and encouraging environment, this one-day workshop will focus on the following:

  • To examine the basics of good public speaking (ie good use of voice / words / body language / props; etc)
  • To construct a speech that will motivate an audience
  • Answering challenging questions from an audience
  • Sharpening public speaking skills, particularly in front of an audience that might not be receptive to an ideal
  • Evaluating others
  • Impromptu speaking
  • Being a Toastmaster / Master of Ceremony

Feedback will be given throughout the session and, at the end of the day, delegates will be filmed. Further, a comprehensive booklet that delves deeper into the art of communication and speaking in public will be given to each delegate.

Workshop facilitator

Delegates will benefit from tuition from Kim Crosby (MBA 2000) who is a member of Toastmasters International, a global organisation devoted to the art of public speaking. Kim is an Advanced Communicator and was runner up in the UK & Ireland Public Speaking Championships 2006. She is also an alumnus of the Business School.
